Assignment 1: constructing a control

Almost any experiment you construct will require a control. Sometimes a positive control is needed sometmes a negative one is needed. your descision in selecting our control would depend on how you want to analyze your results.

A positive control would be an experiment you know would give you a positive reading. for example if you want to test if the leaves have starch you would have to have a test tube(TT) with starch already inside and tested with iodine. Any experiment with the same results as your control would mean that your experimental tube underwent the same reaction as the control

A negative control would be an experiment in which you know would give you a negative reading. This is what we call a baseline reading . for example, a negative control for assignment 1 would be a TT with just dH2O inside. The whole point of a negative control would be to allow you to get a net reading (ie a reading due purely to your experiment)

example:
if you place a yeast-glucose suspension in a syringe and immerse it in a waterbath at 30 C and obtain 25 bubbles per min.
Then place a negative control containing boiled yeast and glucose in the same waterbath and count no. of bubbles. (maybe 2 bubbles per minute)

net production of bubbles would be 23 bubbles per minute. You can then speculate that te other 2 bubles are due to some error (depending on the Q you may have to identify source of error)

In assignment 1 you have to decide what methodology to use with an appropriate control.

For example if I want to examine amount of starch produced by weight, I may need some leaves in a situation in which starch cannot be produced.(maybe place leaf disks in the dark or in dH2O )

Designing the experiment: selection of variables

In order to design an experiment several things must be taken into consideration.

Variables:

dependant and indipendant?

continuous or discreet?

Continuous variables are variables in which a wide range of values are expected or can be obtained. for example :age, time, height, weight, % of polymerization and light wavelengths. Usually continous variables are quantitative.

Discreet (discontinuous) variables are variables in which take a qualitative property. For example: colour, sex and species are discreet. It is possible to convert discreet variables into continous variables. For example instead of evaluating based on colour, it can be converted to 'reflected light wavelength"

Examples of variables seen in assignment 1 are:

temperature

leaf disc size

light intensity

level of destarched leaves

plant species

sugar type

sugar quantity

Bear in mind to include variables that have a possibility in affecting the experiment (either as a source of error or as a contributor to results)

things like leaf thickness, no. of stomata per disc are also variables but since they cannot be controlled are ignored. They can be used however to explain possible discrepancies in your results.

In an ideal experiment only one indipendant variable is mantained and its effect on a dependant variable is monitored. All other variables are mantained or kept constant.

If for exampler we want to examine the effect of sugar concentration then the following things must be mentioned.

1. Stock sugar solution was diluted to the required concentrations. for example to create a 5g/L solution from a 10 g/L solution, take 100ml stock and add equal volume of dH2O.
2. State all your required sugar concentration. Make sure you select a minimum of 5 ranges if the question does not specify no. and make sure they are reasonable values. for example do not say you are going to select a 12g/L solution when your stock is only 10g/L
3. Mention which variables you will keep constant. for example :

• all leaf discs were cut with a cork borer with a 1cm diameter
• apparatus was set up in a regulated water bath with an electronic thermocoupler
• apparatus was set up under a light source with constant light intensity (avoid saying under the sun as sunlight intensity can shift)
• mention no. of leaf discs per experiment eg. 30 or 100 (select values which are reasonable for the experiment) if large samples are readily available then use large samples
• time of experiment. how long does the experiment need to run. for something like this results could change very slowly over time so state something like 2 to 4 hrs.

note some methods automatically become precautions, especially if you state that the same step is conducted across the experiment (eg. mantain light intensity for all experiments, mantain temperature for all experiments.

Designing a hypothesis.

A hypothesis for any experiment has to be designed in accordance to the objective you are trying to achieve. In the case of this experiment you want to find out the effects of certain parameters on the ability of plants to produce starch.

Things to consider:
Should your hypothesis be very strict?
(eg. increasing glucose concentration would result in increased starch storage )the disadvantage to a strict hypothesis is that the possibility of your actual experiment disproving your hypothesis to be very high.

A generic hypothesis would be : Increasing glucose concentrations will have a direct effect on starch storage capacity.

Can your experiment be designed to prove or disprove your hypothesis?
Depending on the apparatus given you might want to consider revising your hypothesis.(eg. the effect of different carbon numbers in carbon source will affect the starch storage rate)if there is no apparatus or indication in measuring the variables, a hypotesis should not be designed in that way .
Similarly you want to make sure that the experiment you design will minimize errors or at least allow them to be controlled.

How many hypothesis per experiment?
Ideally one experiment should be constructed to prove or disprove only one hypothesis. So one experiment should be designed for every hypothesis. Each hypothesis should be written as a separate sentence. Bear in mind it is still possible to have a multiple hypotheses proven/ disproven by a single experiment. It really depends on the overall design of the experiment.

okay okay.. here are the pictures from the twins birthday.. thanks to CC who sent me the pix right away..

birthday boys making their wishes.. (i remember that someone had to yell this out to them.. they seemed to forget to do it first.. but they do seem more serious than the rest of us about this wishing thingy.. lol~)

the cake in question.. it is something called 'Warmest Chocolate' from the Cottage.. our present to the twins.. recommended by Danny, we went there, and Elise helped to pick out the cake.. the twins seem to love chocolate.. (i wouldn't know their faves for sure..)

both of them messing with the cake.. there were quite a number of candles there i can tell you.. hehe.. (18 for each of them mar.. lol~) so, they had fun removing them first.. Willy took out orally but Wilson didn't risk it.. (good thing too.. the idea of possible contamination from BOTH of them is not a welcoming one.. hehe..) then, they looked at one another, who cuts the cake?? Willy was holding the knife instead of Wilson, but he seemed kinda lost.. Elise refused to help him wor.. *sigh* too bad..

they both gave up on trying to cut.. i must admit, Willy's skill wasn't so bad! it was almost better than Kev's.. lol~ *no offense, dude* but, half-way through, Willly stuck the knife there and left it like that..

so, it was up to Chelle to take over.. and she did a great job!! *three cheers, Chelle!! grin* the girls all sat behind and just waited and waited.. then..

time to pass out the cake!!! whose slice is this?? hehehehe.. it is Elise's!! and Wilson gave it to her!!! personally!!! complete with a strawberry!!!! (its her fave fruit.. and she also LOVES chocolate, like the twins..) ngehehehehe.. bet it was a happy happy day for them both.. *evil grin* cos, like what they say:

pm1's "so you think you can dance"

this is a very old post that i missed.. i was on a sabbatical ppl!! so, blogfaery is back^^ (you don't think that posts appear magically out of think air do you??!?) so, here i am paying my dues.. SOMEONE apparantly got bored with the class blog and demanded that i update it.. hey, if i am the only one doing that, of course news will be slow, hey? any volunteers?? you guys must be rotting from boredom ay home anyway.. a little help here would be nice, ppl.. thanks for sticking around though..

two hour lectures can be sooo boring, don't you agree?? *sly wink* but not with SirA around.. *chuckles* it is during our two hour lectures that we get some fun.. and Sir plays along of course, or he initiates it, and we continue with our translation of the subject.. hehe

Sir gets a lot of periods with us 1st thing in the morning.. Bio class students know better than to arrive for class late.. you'll end up in front of Sir's shooting squad.. (you get to answer the questions that he fire at you lar..)nevermind that you don't know that answer, he will patiently stalk the class while you madly rack your brains.. then he'll send you to the library to find the answer.. AFTER he asks you, i thought i told you to read up?? *grin* (our inclass joke.. lol~)

anyway, i digress, its not like Willy and Yugen were the only latecomers, but they were the last to enter.. so, Sir thought it would be fair to dish out some punishment for them.. entertainment for us since we were starting to get bored.. it was only like 8.20 in the morning i think.. everyone seemed in favour of dancing.. but both claimed that they don't know how to dance!! Rabin and David volunteered a demo for them.. they picked a very simple one, the waltz.. err, they mixed up the hand positions though, elise pointed that out.. Rabs 'accidently' put his hand in the very wrong place at one moment.. hehe..

a word of warning, whoever that ends up as Willy and Yugen's partners for our prom next year, you might want to ask them to practice a bit.. hey, the guy has to be able to lead right?! lol~ they are good sports^^

we got bored again after the next hour.. most of the guys escaped out to attack the cafeteria and they took so long that we who were waiting in the class got bored again.. so... we intiated this So You Think You Can Dance? lol~ there were 3 couples this time. and among them, Willy and Wilson, Eusuff and Khaleel, Yugen and Pua..Arif seemed to hedge his bets on Eusuff and Khaleel winning.. haha..

the short interview clip went something like this:

David: WELCOME back to PM1's so you think you can dance?

Rabin: let's ask the opinion of Arif. (to Arif) in your opinion, which couple has the most chances to win?

Arif: i think Couple Two will definitely win.

Rabin: (looks at the screen) Couple Two? Khaleel and Eusuff?

Arif: i think Khaleel will win with the Arabic Pole Dancing and Eusuff will the pole of course.. *class laughs*

Rabin: we will now ask the man himself.. (to Mr.Agas) Mr.Agas, coming from one corner of Malaysia, who do you think is most likely to win our so you think you can dance?

SirA: no one wins in my class.. back to your seats everyone..

class: *groans* awww, sir..

Rabin: so no one's dancing lah, Sir??

Rabin and Sir..

Sir does indulge us in the most outrageous ways in attempts to get us awake during his classes..(he told us that PM2 forced their tardies to dance!! *lmao* sounds fun!!!) lol~ so, to the non-Bio members of PM1, if you wanna see the man being funny, then you should join us and stay in class.. like last week.. (he did mention that we start with simple ones like making them answer his questions.. so, if you don't wanna be indicted, get to HIS class ON TIME~ kakaka)


i had no idea that we are pretty worn out.. hey, its only the first class of the day.. or we are just simply too stressed.. another plausible reason is Sir is simply tired of us staying dumb every single time he shoots questions at us.. anyway, whatever reason, we all suddenly snapped out of our stupor when halfway through class, Sir slapped Rabin on the back and says "fine, why don't you teach the class then now? and i get to be you!"



hehe.. Rabin is almost always the sacrifical goat of our class cos he happens to have a bigger mouth than the rest of us.. so Sir of course takes advantage and pounces on him whenever possible.. *grin* as per usual, Rabin goes like aiyoyo.. why me lar sir.. lol~ then Sir gets Rabin to scoot out of the chair and he sits in instead..


Sir: i will need this bag here on my belly to look like you.. (we know what that means.. *wink*)


Rabin walks up to the board then changes his mind and walks back to sir..


Rabin: Sir, can i have your glasses and tie?


Sir aquieces and Rabin puts the specs on then struggles with the tie.. failing, Sir simply stands up again and does it for him.. Sir tells Rabin to tuck in his shirt to look more of the part and he goes out to the corridor to do that.. Sir then tries to imitate the way Rab usually sits in class by slouching in the chair.. positions his arms to dangle off the plastic chair (Rabin seldom does that i think.. if i recall correctly, his arms are mostly on the table or resting on this stomach.. lol~)


Sir: not a very comfortable position to be in.. *grumbles* wonder why he sits like that.. *mumbles* can't see a thing on the board without my glasses.. *more mumbles* *turns to look at us* you people start looking for lots of questions to ask him later when he comes in..


(H1N1 takes chance of Sir Rabin's absence to snap SirA's pose.. and Elven takes phone out too.. a recording will be found in his phone later much to our delight~)


Rabin walks in and prepares to 'conduct' the class.. (he looks more of the part now.. it is truly weird to see him with specs, tie and T-shirt tucked in though.. Rabin never looks like this!!)

Rabin: now class, who can tell me about *blah blah*


H1N1: *shoots out question* right?


Rabin: *looks disconcerted.. looks at H1N1 like looking at an alien.. scratches head* okay, okay, continue~


H1N1: *continues question*


Rabin: you tell me lar! *walks up and down near the board* okay, start.. what is the first step? arrow the diagram? *looks around the class pointedly*


everyone:*looks back innocently.. laughing all the way of course*


Rabin: no point i'm asking you people.. *approaches Sir*


Rabin: Agas, now, can you tell me *blah blah*


Sir: i don't know, Sir.. i didn't read..


Rabin: go to library and look it up!


Sir: no problem.. *gets out of chair and walks to the door grinning cheekily at Rabin all the way..*

calling him an instructor is already very generous..

because, he is not out to be a teacher at all..

he should have taken a job at military school if he wants to each.. or be a dictator instead..

his classes are conducted at increasingly ridiculous manner.. if we are supermen and superwomen who can read, process and write short notes at sonic speed, then it would be okay.. problem is... WE ARE NOT!!!!!!

(sure, we know that you can do that.. but... WE ARE NOT YOU, SIR!!!!!)

it is very very very frustrating attending the class.. cos you are never sure what is it that he wants.. you tell him you don't understand, he glares at you.. attempt to explain, fail and then loses his temper.. we tell him he is too fast, he tells us to get used to it.. we want to ask questions, he tells us not to interrupt him teaching..

this has to be the worst class i ever needed to attend.. even my F4 Chem teacher who sux like hell did a lot better.. (of course, that teacher's English was not any better if slightly worse.. but that's beside the point now..)

anyone going to do that homework?? (what was the homework anyway?? i did not forget, just that the instructions are too confusing!!! first it was search for different definitons of 'society'.. then, it was define a few other words.. then, it was three questions.. then, the questions, are we supposed to like discuss them or what??)

SO.... someone.. help...seriously.. for our sanity's sake..

we just got the outline of the course today.. there's this blank where you are supposed to fill with your goal..

mine is just to finish this course with my sanity and mental health intact.. if i need to go through such classes everyday, i better get some Prozac ready.. um, SirA, spare some??

(for once, i had to be prompted.. a little bird suggested i take this pix.. cos... it soooo 'cute'~ roflmao.. )hmm, he says that he has been receiving many complaints and among them is that he walks far too much.. so he announces that he will now sit down.. then he says, 'where shall i sit?' he pulls out the nearest desk and perches there.. lol~ it looks so weird.. cos we are all like so not used to him sitting.. Sir ALWAYS walks around.. and we never minded.. we kinda prefer it that way anyway.. *laughs* cos, if he is sitting still, we'd find it difficult to read the board if he is sitting in front. if he sits behind, it could get a little disconcerting.. that would be the end of all possibility of 'under the desk' activites!!!! *gasp* which just means he would spot us with the revision books all the way from behind.. *sob sob* no more sneaking peeks during oral questions.. no thank you!

then he says that another complaint was that he never smiles.. to those people who complained.. you truly want to see him smile ALL the time?? c'mon, give the guy a break.. besides, it can be really creepy if you think about it.. you'd never know if he is really pleased or just smiling sarcastically.. even worse, he could be smiling at us just cos he's contemplating some terrible doom in store for us.. OMG!!! *shudder* lol~ blame me overreactive imagination.. hahaha..

now, you still want him to smile always??

we want OUR SirA BACK!!!

i was rushing to school again, like usual.. got there just before the tardy did.. then, i thought i was in the wrong class.. Mr Peter Ting was standing at the table.. oops, not good.. where's sirA???? and btw, Mr Peter looked so out of place, i can tell you.. at least that's what i thought.. then.. Mr P dropped the bombshell.. after gathering more information from SirA (and it took us 3 tries to get to him.. we called, he was in class. we went to the yellow room, he was out in class.. *grrrr*) apparantly some dung dung parents complains that the teachers are too young. so SirA's going to get transfered to Sri Hartamas. Mr Peter will take over his class and became our mentor for the time being. our class wanted to protest about it. but Mr Peter said it is better for us to confront with Mr Agas first. but like i said, it took us so many times to get him, we almost thought he was avoiding us..he told us better not do anything. if not it would spoil our A LVL record.

so the whole time we were so worried about it. then during physics, Mr RS send us a message said that there is no test for the day. so the guys decided to play back the prank on him. the whole class ran away and went to the cafeteria. the funny thing is that by running away from him. Rabin tore his pants. a very big hole. lolx. he cannot stop complaining and covering. hahahaha.

since physics was the last class, Mr Agas wanted to see us after class. so we decided to run away from him cause we were so pissed at him. but too bad, he entered the class so early. so together with the PM7, we listen to whatever he has to say to us. so he talked for quite long. (sir, you are wasted here.. you should've tried acting.. suits you much better.. could've gotten the Oscar.. but the same can't be said for MrPeter i think.. so, MrP, better stick with teaching in your Mr.Nice Guy way.. *wink* i heard that PM6 loves you.. *whatever*) then we asked him to celebrate his farewell. he bought a cake for his farewell as well. so we celebrated in class. while talking, he made a few gals in PM7 cried. my god. (sir, how could you!!!!!) then he called the class rep to go out and start the ceremony. once the box was opened, the class rep of PM7 got so pissed. but then our class rep, David took the cake and ran after Mr Agas. before that, after Mr Agas open the cake, he ran so fast out of the class together with Mr Peter. they ran faster than the leopard. hahahahaha. the cake says GOTCHA!! HAPPY APRIL 1ST. lolx.

by the way, if you said that PM1 are heartless because we didn't even cry for him. then you are so wrong. we knew all the time that it was a prank. and we prank him back that we gave a petition to Ms Marilyn. we tried to scare the hell out of him. it doesn't seem to work because Ms Marilyn was part of the prank also. though we didn't really send in the petition. so when he came into the class, we were all smiling and laughing ahead. and he asked us whether we are happy that he is leaving. all we do is laughed. hahahahaha. a few second before opening the box, Shan shouted that if it was a april fool prank, the cake will definitely go onto his face. thats why he ran so fast. but still he kept his promise. and the end we ended up cleaning the class. we wanted to leave the class for both the teacher to clean it themselves. but pity them.

first april fool in college was fun. i am so loving it!!! (though my heart might not like the constant stress from the jokes.. haha..) never thought that these teachers will play with us like that!!! love them for it ♥ they are so sporting and they beat us.. almost *bleks* try again next year sir.. rofl. i never regretted to enter class PM1. though Mr Agas is very strict, but without him teaching us biology, we will all become very lazy. cause Mr Agas is the one that motivate us to read ahead of him and the stress he gave us was fun and challenging.

hmm, quite a lot of people from our class are taking their JPA interview today.. Afiq is going on Thursday if i got that right.. and it seems like we are not the only ones with a few hurdles today.. SirA tells us that he is having a meeting at 3pm (yeah, he should be still in.. of are you out already sir??) with the Admins in our Prog Office.. well, hope it all goes well for everyone.. i sent an email detailing our project, and i kept wondering why he didn't know about the topics.. well, i wonder no more.. so the point is, never ever send Willy Seah Wee Li AN EMAIL!!! sms him if you really want him to get it.. of course, you can still email him and then just blame him for no opening his OWN EMAIL~ yeah, good idea, i might just decide to do that next time.. *evil laugh*

Bio postmortem..

alright guys.. this is concerning our Bio presentations in the past week.. and also the 'event' that took place in class two days ago.. i hope we can all agree to keep that under wraps and just limit it to our class.. all agree?? i mean, it is pretty much just our business and no one elses.. besides, who hangs their dirty linen out in public??

talked to Sir a while ago.. he says that if we still want that postmortem, he's fine with it, but it is still subject to his timetable and ours as well.. we are to inform him of our chosen date if we wish to have one.. on the other hand, he says that he would rather not have it.. so what do you guys think?? still want it?? if yes, can you guys please leave comments as to the preferred date and time? so that we can all chose a time that we all agree on and then ask him?

and by the way, what he mentioned the past two days ago still stands.. and he warns us that
there will be more to come should the standards drop..

ziying always sleeps in class right?? haha, i know that this is bad.. it really is.. but i am off coffee and i am caffeine dependent it seems.. so, sorry if you guys have to wake me continually.. *blush*

ok ok, i know that it is no excuse.. so i will not make any excuses for myself.. but i apologise now.. and i want to say thank you to everyone in the class who takes the initiative to wake me up all the time..




i promise that will try my very hardest not to sleep in class next week.. i just figured out a very good way today.. all thanks to the Nescafe van today.. after my bottle of the coffee dispensed today, i am super hyper now.. hands shaking now already lar.. is that bad?? lol~

and a note to SirA, i can't wait for the post-mortem.. i can bet that our group will be fully dissed as we are by far the worst.. you are not angry already now are you, sir??
